Avatar the Last Airbender Sokka Funny Moments
More often than not, Sokka is the comic relief of the main characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender. His sense of humor isn't always appreciated by his friends, but it's definitely appreciated by the audience. So is the fact that he's one of the few people traveling with Aang who isn't a Bender of some kind.
Sokka's definitely got a lot of great one-liners. His sense of humor might account for the majority of his most memorable lines in the series, but he does have more serious moments as well
10 "MY FIRST GIRLFRIEND TURNED INTO THE MOON."
This might be one of the most often quoted lines of Sokka's. On the one hand, it sounds ridiculous to anyone who isn't familiar with Avatar. On the other, it pretty much sums up Sokka's luck up to that point. Zuko's simple response of "That's rough, buddy," is probably what anyone would say to such a strange statement.
That's not to sell Yue short. Her giving her own life to become the new Moon Spirit is a huge sacrifice that allows Aang and the Waterbenders to keep fighting.
9 "YOU JUST LOVE TAKING ME OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, DON'T YOU?"
It's clear that Sokka and Katara love one another very much, but the show's writers do a great job of showcasing their bickering as siblings. Katara is the one who wants to go on this adventure with the Avatar. Sokka, not so much initially.
Katara, for all her practicality, is definitely the one who pushes Sokka outside of what he's comfortable with. Sure, he says this to tease her at the start of the series, but it's pretty much prophetic.
8 "GOOD INSIDE HIM ISN'T ENOUGH. WHY DON'T YOU COME BACK WHEN IT'S OUTSIDE HIM TOO?"
Sokka speaks for everyone who is ever told that there's still good inside someone they've seen as a villain the whole time. When Uncle Iroh pleads to Team Avatar on Zuko's behalf, Sokka isn't convinced.
Zuko does eventually redeem himself, but Sokka isn't interested in bailing Zuko out of trouble every time he's asked just because Zuko might, eventually, be a good person. Zuko has to make that journey for himself, and Sokka's not entirely wrong to be unwilling to help someone who has been hunting him down for months.
7 "THIS IS THE KIND OF WACKY TIME-WASTING NONSENSE I'VE BEEN MISSING!"
When live action children's shows do clip shows to recap past events, they aren't usually anyone's favorite. Avatar's version of a clip show is Aang and his friends watching the Ember Island Players recount their journey, and it might be some wacky nonsense serving to waste a little time, but it's a fan favorite episode.
Not only does it give the characters a break from all the danger and training, but it gives the audience a chance to see that the writers know exactly the kinds of things fans are saying about the characters.
6 "LOOK, I HATE TO BE THE WET BLANKET HERE, BUT SINCE KATARA'S BUSY, I GUESS IT'S UP TO ME."
Sokka knows where he stands in his group of friends - and he knows that he's not really the one in charge. More often than not, it's Katara calling the shots as the "mom friend."
Though Sokka says this to get a slight dig in at his sister, he's really proving that he can have a level head when he needs one. Sokka proves repeatedly that he's got a head for strategy and that he can be trusted to think clearly in battle.
5 "I KNEW IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME! APPA ATE MOMO!"
Part of what is so great about this line is that Sokka jumps to the most ridiculous of conclusions. Plenty members of their party have gone missing in the past and it's never been suggested that Appa would eat one of them.
The other aspect that's great? Sokka is so concerned about Momo that he climbs inside Appa's mouth to look for him. When Sokka first encountered Momo, he was ready to eat him. Being willing to let Appa swallow him to track down the missing lemur might be one of the strangest ways Sokka grows in the series.
4 "YOU KNOW, IT WAS REALLY UNCLEAR."
Out of context, this line doesn't mean much. With deadpan delivery as Sokka watches the Ember Island Players potentially kill of Jet, however, it gets a chuckle out of the audience and some confusion from Zuko, who just wants to know if Jet died or not.
One of the things the showrunners for Avatar were told by Nickelodeon when the series aired was that they had to keep major deaths vague. The network didn't want the series to be too much of a downer for fans. This line speaks to just why Jet's death is never shown on screen.
3 "IT'S THE QUENCHIEST."
Anyone who has seen Avatar likely remembers the group getting lost in the desert and running out of water after Appa is stolen from them. When Katara runs out of water, Sokka decides to take a chance on the water found inside a cactus.
He initially dubs it "refreshing," but it only takes a little bit before he's completely tripping, claiming that Toph is on fire and that a mushroom cloud in the distance is a "friendly mushroom." Taking it upon himself to advertise for cactus water as the "quenchiest," however, might be the best of the bunch.
2 "I'M JUST A GUY WITH A BOOMERANG. I DIDN'T ASK FOR ALL THIS FLYING AND MAGIC."
Not everyone in the Avatar universe is a Bender. Sokka is, for a long time, the only one in the traveling group who doesn't have any of those abilities.
Every so often, the audience is reminded of how unevenly matched a fight can be when it's a guy with a boomerang against a large group of Firebenders. It's almost unfair that Sokka is thrust into a world he doesn't think he can keep up with - but he manages.
1 "I'M SORRY MASTER, YOU'RE WRONG. I AM NOT WORTHY. I AM NOT WHO YOU THINK I AM... I LIED SO THAT I COULD LEARN SWORDMANSHIP FROM YOU..."
Sokka spends an entire episode learning how to properly wield a sword in battle. He learns from a former member of the Fire Nation Army under the guise of being from one of the colonies. It's a bold lie, but Sokka is too honorable to keep it up. Of course, it turns out Sokka's teacher knows all along who he is.
Sokka's confession helps to prove that Sokka is worthy of the position he's in. Not only does he get a pretty sweet sword made from "space rock," but he also starts to understand his value to the group. They need him as much as he needs them.
